Little did I expect this to be a boat trip till I learnt it from Kevin after the impromptu outing on Friday.
The set off was pretty early as we have to reach Desaru by 8am as the chartered boat leaves at 8:30am. Rise and shine at 3:41am and by the time I reached Rickson's place, it was about 4:45am and we managed to get some food and baits from the nearby market at Kevin's place.
Customs was cleared by 7am and we reached Desaru via the new expressway, E22 by 8am. Quite a fast journey considering also the higher speed limits and fewer traffic while we made our way there.
The place was set just by the beach - a typical village by the sea type of residency. Cats and dogs could be seen running around the village where boats are parked on the trailer beside houses. We boarded the boat around 8:30am and set off in the faraway sea where we can no longer see land. Kevin's intent was to have a look at the lighthouse but it was already destroyed by a shipwreck some time ago. As the water was also too choppy, we decided to head to another location.
We settled beside a large vessel, named "Ocean Nymph" which the dock was really high up and we could not see any human activity. The catch was pretty good here with my trusty tambang hooks.
By the time we were done, it was already almost 4pm and we reached the coast line by about 5pm. Washup done and we made our way for dinner at Jusco Tebrau City before heading back home.
As I have not been here for awhile, it took me awhile to get back to the right road to head back to Singapore. Traffic was really congested for a Saturday evening too.
Crash and burn for the night after unpacking, cleaning of the car and washing up of the sea-water soiled equipments.
Another weekend is over and once again I had the opportunity to bring dearie beyond Singapore borders for food and entertainment. The local places are simply uninteresting.
I decided to give a roadside Chendol stall a try as it was pretty hot in the earlier part of the trip. Not the best and pretty costly.
Lunch was done at Koo Chuan coffeeshop where we had Penang prawn noodles. Food was served fast and we overheard the stall owner replenishing their soup during our dining. The drive up was pretty smooth. Despite a passing downpour, we were well-sheltered in the big Aeon mall, which was our next stop.
Moving on, it's almost dinner time when we left the mall and went back to KSL City for some in-between meal fillers and more shopping. By dinner, we were all ready to head to the famous 旺仔淥淥 along with the famous abalone noodles. As these fried stuffs were rather filling, we couldn't go for the 2nd round and it's time to get back.
A worthy day trip and break well-spent with dearie from all the book-mugging sessions that went day-to-day!

We woke up around 4 - slightly behind schedule and by the time we left Kevin's home, it was about 5am; my ride was parked a little further away and finding the way out was a little challenging as I had to wriggle and wind through the unfamiliar layout of the estate; anyhow, I was a little perspiry by the time I met up with everyone.
Aster is going back to her hometown too; as both herself and Iris are locals.
6am+ Woodlands checkpoint hit at and it took me a while to link up with the rest as I took a slight detour; the direct route was the NS Highway which dips left upon clearance of Malaysian Immigration - anyhow we managed to link up at the Macdonalds which was about 30 mins drive from where I last communicated with them in Johor Bahru.
The first stopover was about an hour or so of drive up and we took the opportunity to reload on rations, clear our "excess oil" and discuss on the next order of move. Not a bit of the lack of rest is hitting me as I continue to keep myself well-hydrated.
By the time we hit Ipoh, it was already way past lunch time and we all continued to live on the packed food we got from the few stopovers; sun had picked up tremendously.
3pm+ At Penang Bridge, time had passed so much quickly and I could see a major traffic slowdown apart from the slowdown along the highway due to bottlenecked roads and rainy areas. This place was a little more challenging to drive, but the motorist here are not as rash like those in Singapore. It took us almost an hour to reach Aster's place before we made our way to Iris' place.
Once touchdown, her mum brought us out for food - the first stopover was at a coffeeshop which sold various types of noodles such as the fried kuay teow, pig innards beehoon, rojak and more types of noodles. Still feeling fresh at this point of time.
8pm+ More food; I call this the 2nd stuffing session.
When we were done and ready to rest, it was already past midnight and that was when I finally lay rest for the day. Iris was still astonished that I am strong and going up to this point in time - considering I had only 3 hours of sleep the night before. Since I'm putting up at Iris' place, I shared the room (Iris') with Kevin and she slept with her mum.

It is the final day of work and I have to pack all things up nice and neat so that I will not fall into a rude shock when I return 8 days later.
All's well so I can get back home, wrap up with final packing and see dearie for one time before I hit the road. This will be my very first and longest distance travelled by road on a self-pilot basis and that will mean a personal achievement when I complete the journey up.
As much as I look forward very much to this road trip, a certain anxiety can be felt within. It gets easier when the evening approached and soon, I was already at Kevin's place to bunk over for the night before getting up earlier for the long jouney ahead.

It's the final day of our fishing trip and we took the last boat at noon back to mainland. Lunch was done at the nearby KFC and we decided to take a journey up to this wholesale shop, but halfway through the route, we made a u-turn back home as the location wasn't affirmative and we had to take into consideration the buffer of traffic jams on a Sunday back to Singapore.
True enough, there was considerable jam and we all reached Singapore at dinner time. I took most of the catches as Kevin and Rickson didn't want anything, and Yide already has a month's supply of fish at home to eat.

I had been up the whole night and greeted Rickson while they all woke up to fish in the early hours, shortly after sunrise. Managed to get my sunrise shot and one small fish catch before I rested for the morning.
Woke up for lunch just in time; and then continued the rest of the fishing activities. I got 1 todak with "entanglement shot" and it was the biggest catch of the day I had. Kevin got one later too.
Right into the night - Night Fishing. Fried bee hoon were served as supper and I managed to catch another todak at night - the excitement woke up a fellow fisher who was napping on the hammock as I carried my catch to our spot.
Just another day more to go; and this fishing trip is certainly getting exciting!

Finally we got to set out for this trip as a complete group - with Rickson, Yide and Kevin - the Super Gangsters!
First pickup point, 5:30am at Yide's place, followed by Rickson, then finally Kevin before we move up to Malaysia. Kevin slept only at 3am thus he was stuggling to wake up.
We quickly got our breakfast from the first stopover point in Johor Bahru, a Macdonalds. I had to step up on the accelerator that my breakfast was soaked in coffee; so all I managed to eat was the hash brown while the rest had to be dunked into the nature as it was beyond "humane" consumption.
The road up was about 1:30; car was parked at the jetty's parking facilities and a boat ride there was about 30mins. Lunch, dinner and supper were provided.
I stayed up to fish after a short nap, while the rest of the guys slept during the night.

Finally arrived after a 7-hour flight which I almost fell asleep soon after takeoff.
The weather here is much cooler - far more than what I had expected but still tolerable.
Nearest station to where I lived is Museum station which still bears the flavour of the earlier century's architecture but nothing falling apart. It's actually about 6mins' walk from the station which I had arrived only at 4pm local time after seeking help from a pretty receptionist at a Chinese restaurant in the CBD area. It took me awhile to find myself my hostel which happened that the road was unmarked on the map I got from the airport.
This CBD area is quiet like a ghost town as it was Sunday when I arrived.
For the rest of the places, shops had already closed when I discovered them, but without the crowd, it allowed me to appreciate the architecture and get some clean shots.
Down Pitt Road, rows of Korean and Indian restaurants lined the street and it was like a little Korea as many Koreans tend to hang around that area.
Even when shops are closed, one can still see buskers and beggars at street junctions trying to get the attention of kind souls.
Further down George Street (a pretty long road), I hit Chinatown and the places that business were still on were the eateries, which locals and many Asians could be found. This was one part of Sydney City where one can see much more life in, apart from the bars and pubs scattered all over but nothing too far a walk.
Today's furthest distance was Chinatown.
I have to switch my bag tomorrow so that I won't be bogged down with weight unbalancedly should I need to get some supplies for daily living.

This trip has been good. Met the main body of Rimba who lives in a field house right off the city area of Terengganu.
The entire journey from Kuala Lumpur was a whopping 7 hours before we are all settled down. Dinner was sumptous at Reuben's landlord's place where they had invited the Rimba group to join in.
Learnt that Reuben has been here for a couple of years and live fully on sponsorship in their research. This is something unusual which not many Singaporean guys will venture into doing. Considering the type of lifestyle one would have to live with, not many will be keen to take the plunge.
We had a walk around town, that was filled with the festive mood after dinner with the younger group. Street shows, decorations and fireworks could be seen around the heart of Chinatown which was within less than 10 minutes' walk from where we will be putting up.
Finally settled down in a room, courtesy of the landlord, for the night at 110hrs.

Set off at 9am after an Indian delicacy breakfast near Casa Kiara II. Night rest had been good after putting up at Jackie's abode, where I could see the street lights of Genting from afar.
It was a drizzling while we set off.
Passing through several villages, we finally reached Kuala Terengganu. This was the only developed town amongst the spread of villages that were scattered throughout the state, where we had also passed through before hitting this place.
Reuben brought us to the fieldhouse where he resides while working, the nearby resort / park, which was about 10mins' drive from his fieldhouse. In his fieldhouse, all sorts of equipment could be seen; mountain trekking stuffs, camera traps, GPSes and things that are used for one to get by the primitive living of the place.
I had stayed awake throughout the trip except for a few occasions where I had snoozed off from the fatigue of the long road trip but we finally made it to settle down.

A stopover for washroom break at Caltex after passing Yong Peng entrance.
The journey from Melaka to Johor had been delayed by 15mins due to the rainy weather when entering Johor. Rainy zones were separated over a few spots and many Singapore cars could be seen along the North-South Highway. That had led me to think if I should take a try to drive into Malaysia some day.
If there are no dinner stopovers, I might reach Singapore Customs by dinner time. But being a Sunday evening, delays can be expected when clearing customs.
Has dearie taken her dinner and doing well on her revision?
There are a few long weekends coming up; I can start planning for the next backpacking journey to another nearby location for a short trip. Another round of homework and preparations to be done.

Finally on the bus and getting myself cooled under the aircon. The journey towards home sweet home is about to begin.
Come Thursday, it'll be dearie's birthday. Time certainly flies; the end of April coming, and soon, midyear will be here.
The backpacker's journey was indeed interesting, as it teaches one to be resourceful, independent and even more self-responsible to 'survive'; abroad. The only thing I got for myself are just top up necessities, as well as the experience of travelling alone. The other things that I most probably will spend on, will be souvenirs for people who are close to me.
Tender shoulders accompany me home today as I have had been extensively exposed to the sun, walking seemingly endlessly for the past 2 days. Had I walked a little further, I could arrive at St John's Fort, which is a few kilometres away from the end of Jalan Cheng Ho 10.
Living in Melaka for the past 3 days does speak about living into the country and getting accustomed to things here - as true as those quotes in related forums that I've read about.
Thank God that all things are in good order, especially where I have my meals and safeguarding my personal valuables.

Bus according to the coach agency, will arrive at 2:45pm, that leaves me with ample time to rest and cool down after the speed trot from Jonker Walk after getting some foodstuff and souvenir for my family.
Weather is a little cooling here now as compared to the previous days.
Hope dearie will like the little surprise I got for her from here.
Hope I can reach Singapore not too late, so I can also spend a little more time with dearie to let the week end proper.
Despite being a decently priced trip, I still miss the local food back home as most of the food here are pretty of the general population, which appeared pretty heavy, thus, I settled more for Chinese or fast food.
I must say that this trip is pretty fulfilling as I've captured most of what I wanted. The only thing that was missing was dearie's company: otherwise all else went quite well.

I didn't manage to go to Melaka River as planned as I had already dozed off after dinner yesterday. Light as it gets, just a pizza and spicy floss bread completed with soya milk from the nearby 7-11.
Took a walk to see how Melaka river looks, but nothing really breathtaking, thus decided to leave for breakfast. There are a few stalls around Mahkota Plaza that sells cheap local breakfast, but I decided to give it a pass, partially, due to hygiene concerns. Finally decided to have it at Macdonalds, Big breakfast for RM9.75; still cheaper than having it back home.
Finally managed to get into the McD free wifi with a free registration and replied dearie's email to keep her updated on how I am doing here. A few shots done nearby before the horde of day-trip tourists come by, before making my way back to my hostel to complete the photo processing.
Day 1's done. Less photos taken on Day 2 as the gruelling journey had left me pretty tired. Furthermore, it isn't quite safe to go about Melaka at night being a solo traveller.
For the rest of the places which is more time-efficiently reached by car, I'll leave it for the next trip with dearie. I hope she'll enjoy it, no doubt weather can be searingly hot here. I dislike hot weather, but if I've decided to visit a hot climate country, I'm all prepared to sweat it all out.
I'll be checking out in an hour, which leaves me 2hrs to grab some local products from Jonker area before heading back to the pickup point. If only I have more energy and more time, I could venture even further than where I walked yesterday.
The place is relatively peaceful and slow-paced; hardly any shops are open when I woke up early this morning; probably they are catered to the timing of tourists' arrival to maximise business.
Let's hope the journey back home will be swift, so I have time to settle down before going back to work tomorrow.

I did not realise that it was already 8:45am when I woke up, as the room's pitch dark in the day even with the lights off. Well, that makes it all more conducive to sleep.
I had about 115 shots yesterday. Since today will be the last full day, it'll be gOod to go further out of Melaka City Centre to see those places of interest.
Moving out after some quick bites.

Had done a massive walk around Melaka and even out of City Centre, just to be able to see San Poh memorial, which is at the junction at the end of Jalan Temeggong, after St Xavier's Church.
There are many roads named after Cheng Ho, who seemed to play an important part in Melaka's history.
I've spent a small portion of the afternoon exploring the malls; apparently, they are all bridge-connected. Man, they're huge!
The daytime trip has covered most of the attractions around Melaka City Centre in 6hrs. Being on foot with a 10kg backpack is indeed a challenge; hopefully the shoes I got can last me for many more such journeys ahead.
With due respect, I'm not photographing the Dutch tombstones which is just a few flights of stairs above A. Farmosa, a fortress which is several centuries old.
After the break, the next stop will be Melaka River, which is much nearer to those further places, which, should not take much time by foot.
Is dearie having a good rest and revision? I certainly hope she's coping well without my presence beside her.
There are still a few places which can be explored, but shall leave these to the next trip with dearie; hopefully, soon, so we can move on to explore the other parts of the world.
Weather had always been sunny here so far in Melaka. The only time a suggestive sign of rain camen was when I was walking through Jonker area.
There are so many interesting places just to seen feel, and hang around in Melaka.
I'll be making my way to home sweet home in less than 24hrs' time, and getting back to see dearie and her family, and of course, not forgetting my own.
Vincent and his wife should be on their way home soon, as they had came over on Thursday. Such a small world, of all places, to see a friend in Melaka. The world isn't so big afterall...or should it be what most people call, fate?

After a hike around Jonker area for street shots, the alarm had sounded for a refuelling break.
Duck noodle, souped, with coffee, all for RM4.20. Great tasting and even more economical than the fast food I had for meals yesterday.
Yesterday's slumber was great; no parasotes on the clean bed and room, just that I had missed the fellowship with the backpackers whom had woken up early for breakfast.
Continuation of exploring Melaka will resume after I have a good rest here.
Though far away from home and yet no so far, things does make a difference when you have friends accompanying you abroad. It'll be great if I can have dearie along with me, but just worried that she will not be able to keep up with the massive walking that I had done so far. By the end of this trip, my hiking shoes should have been well-seasoned and a more comfortable walking experience will lie ahead.

1200hrs, stopover at Yong Peng, but due to traffic jam at Customs area, it is not at the usual restaurant area, but rather, a mobile hawker, whose goods are sold on their vehicle. Somehow, it reminds me of the 'ninja van' during my military days where they provide their goods to those in military training areas.
Another 1.5hrs before reaching Melaka. Although midday, the sun hadn't been scorching as we all stopped at an area which was shielded by clouds. Breaktime was 15mins, but I had already had a full rest on the bus till there was no more room for 'charging'.
There are some travellers who are on a day tour, so the delay had put them at a disadvantage as it translated to less time for them to explore the historical town.
The first thing to do was to find my lodging upon arrival. Right now, planning my hike route will be the best thing.
In Malaysia, according to the on bus guide, today's a normal working day, unlike in Singapore, so the flux of visitors were unexpected.
I simply can't wait to taste the local chendol at my destination, which I had learnt, is something which can't be tasted in Singapore. Many swear by its good taste, so let's see how good it's gonna be.

I'm finally on board the bus to Melaka; this is the 2nd solo journey that I've embarked on; this time, with the agenda of seeing and capturing the place through Shutter's Eyes.
Has dearie awakened from her slumber? Hope she doesn't sleep too late so as to be able to optimise today's time for her revision.
Moving out.
In a few hours' time, I will be at my planned destination; so far, things are in order, and will continue to keep close tabs on my activities.
There's quite a fair number of non-locals who are going for a vacation too.
Long weekends are good for such short gettaways, especially for those of us who had slogged hard at work.
To a certain extent, it is a little lonely, but overall it's good exposure as an independent traveller.

An extremely early morning on a public holiday as I embark on my way to the bus station to the first journey of backpacking. This would be a short trip over the weekend to take advantage of the public holiday that falls on a Friday.
Dearie must be sound asleep right now...if not for the sake of her examinations, I would have brought her along, unless I'm on a very objective trip, such as specific theme-based photoshoot...well, to places where little people would venture.
Did some reading prior to the final preparation before moving out; the rest was about 3.5hrs prior to today's trip. No matter, that's already more than 1/2 of my usual rest.
I'm gonna miss dearie over this weekend; her presence, and her all-time favourite Pooh whom she would carry around the house before tossing onto her bed.
I'm reaching my embarkation location soon as the remaining part will be by foot; a minor part of this trip's primary form of getting around.
